A coiled wire is attached to both the saddle and the airbag vest. Once the equestrian and the saddle are separated, the coiled wire pulls a "key" out of a gas release system and inert gas inflates the air cushion. After a half second the gas is automatically released through the gas release valve.The inflated airbag will protect the equestrian as soon as the equestrian touches the ground.
